NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW

Hiya,
So Its finally time for my first NHCG Salon Profile!! A Salon Profile is our version of a salon review where we will rate beauty salons on the following ambiance, price, professionalism, skill and overall rating.

This month, I will be profiling Supreme Beauty Salon, Lekki 1, Lagos. Note this review is an independent opinion and should not be construed otherwise, please readers who have visited this salon should feel free to rate the salon alongside these ratings in the comment box.

AMBIANCE;
When you open the doors of Supreme Beauty Salon, you are immediately welcomed by a large oval mirror to take a good look at yourself before your 'transformation' and then a large vase at the corner holding dried flowers and twigs, kinda chic! I Also like the really high wall that extends to to the roof and forms some kind of balcony where people upstairs can look down. The Salon is spacious and well laid out, work stations neat and put together, dryers put off to one section of the salon so clients are not all cramped up, the manicure and pedicure section well laid out and the braiding section too. Serenity doesn't exactly come to mind when thinking of Supreme's ambiance but it still has something going on and so for ambiance I would rate Supreme Beauty Salon  highly, maybe an 8 /10!!

 PRICE;
Most times the prices Salons peg on their services are determined by the area they are situated. So you realize that you are paying for the same exact relaxer treatment at a different price because of location! Supreme being in Lekki therefore charges according to the pockets of its mostly buoyant residents. A relaxer treatment will set you back about N2500 (with your relaxer kit) last I checked. But an off putting thing is a simple wash and set cost the exact same amount of money, now that's a rip off considering that the time, skill, energy put into the two processes are not at par!! I think getting a weave fixed there is about N3000-N5000 depending on style. For Price Ill rate them as average because I have visited salons that cost less that do a good job and I have also visited salons that cost more and are nothing special. So 5/10 should be fine.

PROFESSIONALISM;
This and skill are the two aspects that will either keep me coming to a salon or well away from it! At Supreme, most times you are immediately welcomed and attended to by a manager. She will ask for the purpose of your visit and then assign a stylist to you. I think that is really neat! you go to some salons and you stand there for five minutes, everyone's walking past you and acting like you are invisible until you desperately beckon on someone, anyone to attend to you and if you are lucky someone responds, if you are not, you walk out and no one notices! Well at Supreme they have ironed out that issue. In terms of other staff, I still hear the usual Naija bickering and pidgin English speaking in front of clients, don't know if we can ever get that out of the salon system in Naija but in all honesty at Supreme, the presence of the manager keeps things civil! For Professionalism I have to give them a 9/10

SKILL;
The beauty industry is a recycled industry! In the sense that , the same stylists just keep moving themselves around carrying along the same level of skill from one salon to the other. Supreme Salon is somewhat a 'victim' of this recycling. Most of its staff are male stylists I have seen work in other salons here in Lekki. Most of them don't really have skill  with natural hair besides the basic fixing of weaves in my opinion and the one time I heard one of them give advice to a client, he told her that her hair was shedding so she needed a trim! Now from my previous post on trimming we all know he was blabbing, the poor lady who came in with a bob left the salon with an Anita Baker style hair cut! the guy was just scissors happy and it took all in me not to involve myself that day because the one time I told a stylist at a Lekki  Salon that relaxing to the tips of the hair was wrong, I almost started a fight! Hence for skill ill give them a 6/10 because even their weaves are not always great.

OVERALL RATING;
My over all rating of Supreme Beauty Salon would be Above Average(7/10) because though they have a few rough patches here and there in terms of skill and price(which is relative), they manage to keep their clients satisfied. The basic cleanliness of the salon, the ample amount of stylists which make for a large workforce and the manager of the salon guarantee that you will always be taken care of once you are in there though I cannot guarantee the level of care you will be given!!

Hope you enjoyed this post. This review should be helpful in directing you on what to look out for in your salon. I will be visiting more salons specifically to profile them and I won't always be sweet and rosy! Here comes Naija Hair Police!!lol. I might even let them know so they check out my blog and see what I and my readers think of their salons!What do you think? Drop a comment, ill gladly respond!!

Hiya,
Hope you have all enjoyed your weekend!! Well as I promised in my very first post, every month, this blog will focus on a celebrity who has stylish hair and serves as hair inspiration.

Our Hair Icon for the month of June is none other than Nike Oshinowo Soleye, Miss Nigeria 1990, Fashionista, Naija's very own Victoria Beckham without the David or gorg kids that is(wink). Nike is a self proclaimed 'Diva' and has managed to stay fit and fabulous even at Forty!!

Now let's get down to our business! What qualifies Nike as our Hair Icon. For one, Nike obviously has weaves on majority of the time but the only way we know that is because if all this was her natural hair, she would have let us all know a looonnnggg time ago! We would have read in magazines comment's from her  like ' Oh no! This is alllll mine you know! I have very good genes you know!' (in her very elaborate 'britishish' accent) lol, I Kid! But really my point is the quality, texture and color of her weaves are so believable! and that should be the goal of any weave wearer of the 21st century! Hollywood celebrities have been wearing weaves for years but we could never guess, but here in Naija, its a different story! Just take a look at three of this year's Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Contestants!
Really? Babe, We see your dark hair over this light brown weave!

Really Pretty Girl but I'm sure the hair stylist had a straightener to blend in her natural hair with this weave!!
Her natural hair is a different color from her weave and it shows

Nike on the other hand does not give up her weave secret so easily. Now I know her weaves must cost a fortune, so I am not saying go buy the most expensive weave out there because the truth is, you can have an expensive weave and still make it look cheap!! So my advice to you all weave wearers out there is learn from Nike, follow the following rules;

WEAR A WEAVE THAT IS THE SAME COLOR AS YOUR NATURAL HAIR

LET THE LENGTH OF YOUR WEAVE BE BELIEVABLE 'ISH'! I know its not your own hair but you don't have to make it so obvious! if you want a weave to be your signature look,  then the length should be reasonable don't you think?

BLEND BLEND BLEND!!!Please do not go out of the house with your natural hair sticking out like a sore thumb over your weave! Please blend BUT do not be tempted to use Gel!!Nasty!!It will dry out your hair and break it off at the edges. I use Leave in conditioner to blend in my edges and it works!

EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO USE A COLORED WEAVE MAKE SURE YOU;
Use a weave color that is not too far from your natural hair color,
If you'd rather not color your hair(I advice you don't) then leave very little hair out at the edges,
Keep up with the blending!
Nike in Honey blonde locks! Can pass for her own hair (if we did not know better :)!
So dear fashionistas out there hope you can learn from the Icon herself, hope you enjoyed the post! Drop a comment, send a message and Ill gladly respond to you!! Thanks for dropping by!

Hiya, so  I have decided to start a segment called 10 THINGS! Once in a while I will post 10THINGS about a certain topic. Today's topic is just my sarcastic way of listing the things that go wrong at salons here in Naija most of which I have already addressed. Enjoy!!

 I love to pamper myself every so often and in the past part of this self pampering included frequent trips to the salon to get my hair washed or steamed or curled. Well these days, things have changed! I only visit the salon when I absolutely have to. Each time, I go with my bag of expectations only to return home with it deflated. Deflated because in the course of my visit I would have almost blurted out at least 10 things I hate about my visit! I am sure your initial reaction to this topic is that it sounds too harsh or critical but by the time I’m done listing these ten things, I have a feeling you will be nodding your head in agreement.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.       <!--[endif]-->First off, madam stylist, I hate that you have brought that ‘white now turned brown towel’ to use on my hair and that the one on my shoulder is frayed and has holes on it; with all the money being spent here, you’d think that these towels should have been replaced with new ones by now or should I bring a towel from my house next time?
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.
         Okay,so you say I have split ends and I need a trim but why have you given me a hair cut! Did my ends split to my roots? I hate that I can no longer use the ponytail ruffle I had on my hair when I walked into the salon because I now have no ponytail!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.
      I hate that you are constantly shoving this your concocted ointment in my face and telling me it is the answer to all my hair woes, please let me make the decision myself.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->4.
<!--[endif]-->      How dare you apply relaxer to the ends of my hair!! That part is already relaxed, if you read the relaxer box or went to a proper beauty school you would know that all you are doing is destroying my hair!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->5.
<!--[endif]-->      I hate that you have now abandoned me for 45minutes because I told you my scalp is not itching! I know you want to have lunch but don’t you think it can wait till after my hair has been washed!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->6.
<!--[endif]-->     Why are you using the smallest tooth comb on my thick coarse hair, pulling lumps of it out in the name of combing! What happened to the wide tooth comb on the counter!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->7.
           <!--[endif]-->I know your ‘customer’ just walked in and you can’t wait to get your hands on her hair but I hate that  you want to wash out the deep conditioner on my hair barely two minutes after you put it on! It needs time to penetrate deep into my hair as the name implies!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->8.
           <!--[endif]-->I hate that I am sweating profusely and my ear lobes are bright red and sting so bad but you are insisting that my rock hard hair is yet to be dry under this your hooded dryer so that you can buy time to finish relaxing your ‘customer’s’ hair! Who sent you to start in the first place!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->9.
<!--[endif]-->      I hate that I forgot to bring my own ceramic hair straightener with me because the one you are using on my hair has no more ceramic coating and is literally frying my hair and even with all the smoke you still want to go over my strands five times!!
<!--[if !supportLists]-->10.
<!--[endif]-->      I hate that you expect a tip from me even after the torment you have put me through! I thought people give tips for a job well done; do you really in your heart believe that you deserve a tip right now?

So you see, for fear of blurting out any of these 10things and risk starting a fight, I have consciously kept the salon visits to the minimum and learnt to do the basic things my hair needs myself however, for salon standards in Naija to improve it’s up to customers to speak up (maybe not in my exact words) and correct stylists when they are engaging in bad practices rather than mumble under your breath and vow never to return because in all honesty, the next salon you go to will have stylists doing the same annoying things.

 Hope you enjoyed this Post, stay tuned for my very first SALON PROFILE post, drop a comment, ask for advice and Ill gladly respond.

Hiya,
I am so sorry for my somewhat neglect of this blog all week long, It hasn’t been intentional, hope you all have not abandoned me J

Oh Well, let’s get down to business. Have you ever been in the chair of a stylist and endured comments by the stylist regarding how bad you need a trim and how your ends are so light because you have not gotten a trim and how all your hair will keep falling out if you do not get a trim!While there might be some truth to what the stylist is saying, please do not buckle under his/her pressure until you know these basic facts!

The First Facts is; There is a HUGE difference between hair that is SHEDDING and hair that is BREAKING!! Shedding is a normal occurrence for hair, every hair strand goes through a cycle and at the end of its cycle the hair strand will come off from its root(look out for a white tip). Because the strands individually fall off at different times due to different cycles, it is expected that when you comb your hair as one hilarious stylist put it to me, HAIR MUST CUT!! But that stylist was wrong, if she knew what she really was talking about she should have said, HAIR MUST SHED! However too much Shedding can be a problem but Trimming will not solve it, there are other methods to stop over shedding that I will discuss in future.

 Hair must not cut, when hair is ‘cutting’ then it is breaking and breaking is caused primarily by SPLIT ENDS! One of my favorite past times is dealing with my split ends! A split end as the name implies, is when the ends of your hair split into two. This can be cause by various elements; heat, chemical treatment, too much hair manipulation or using blunt scissors to cut your hair. Split ends are inevitable! Every body has split ends even Oprah!! Lol. The only difference between a healthy head of hair and an unhealthy one is the VOLUME of split ends it has! Split ends are no good, so for healthy ends, when you see a split end you clip it off with a sharp hair cutting scissors, if you do not do that your hair can break off from the split and that’s what causes thin ends.

 A simple illustration should make all this clear; HAIR STRAND A and B start out their wonderful hair cycle together, every thing is fine and dandy until one dreaded day while A and B are chilling in Hairville, the dreaded HOT CURLING IRON lands on Strand A! ‘Ouch!! That must have hurt’ thought Strand B, and as Strand B braces itself for the impact of Hot curling Iron, the Landlord of Hairville remembers to use some heat protection on Strand B. Whew!  Strand B is now protected and the Hot Curling Iron doesn’t harm Strand B. The next day, as landlord is raking through the field of Hairville with Her Comb, Strand A all weak and exhausted gets caught in the teeth of her comb and Strand B watches as Strand A who was her size yesterday, becomes 3inches shorter with a  very bad K leg(split)!!:( Sad Story!! Now do you see my point or my illustration has confused you further!! Lol!

 Well, let’s get down to Fact 2; I don’t know if you have heard this before, but ill tell it again, Trimming your hair WILL NOT per say make it grow longer! FACT! Do not let that Stylist lie to you again. The only thing as I tried to illustrate above, is that rather than you allow your ends to come off indiscriminately and thin out thereby causing you to have unhealthy looking hair, a trim will take out those dead ends and leave your ends looking FULLER as a result and that will not necessarily lead to LONGER hair. Longer Hair will come as a result of how well you can retain your ends in between relaxer treatments using a combination of techniques including but not limited to keeping the split ends at bay. So do not sit back abandon your hair for months in a weave and take the weave out and trim your ends in hopes of longer hair, doesn't work that way.

The third Fact is, there is a major difference between a hair CUT and a TRIM! If you cut off anything  beyond one and a half inches, its a hair cut. Below is a before and after picture of my trimmed ends.

BEFORE THE TRIM

AFTER THE TRIM

By all means if you need a hair cut, get one! But if you go in for a trim and your stylist tries to give you a hair cut, please speak up or its your fault for letting the stylist take out your healthy ends and set you back in your hair journey.

Now I have let you in on these facts, I trust that the next time you get to the salon and your stylist says you need a trim, you will know whether you do or not and to what extent. Generally you could get a trim every time you get a relaxer but please don't let them trim your hair when it's wet, because wet hair has more elasticity and can give a false illusion of longer hair so its better to trim your dry ends so you get an accurate idea of how much hair needs to go and the ends usually come out sharper.

For those of you who would rather do your trims yourself, I have two methods Ill recommend; 'The Seek and Destroy' method which is actually what I talked about above, where you section your hair and systematically look for split ends and clip them off. The other method is what Ill call 'The Gliding Finger method' (See Picture Above) You take a section of your hair and using one finger behind the section, push forward and then use the other two fingers to glide the hair over the middle finger, as you do so, closely look at the ends that stick out and clip off the split ends. Finally, when dealing with split ends make sure you are under BRIGHT light because it will best highlight them. Wanna know how a split end looks? Below is my attempt at taking a picture of a split end from my head of hair. See how the end divides into two strands!

I will stop here for now, hope this post was helpful and hope you now know when to trim or not to trim. Keep the comments coming, send a message and  I'll gladly respond. Thanks for stopping by!

What's HOT? HAIR SCARVES!!!!
Don't you just love 'em? Well I do! Hair Scarves are a really cool way to spice up any look. You can be dressed down in a white 'T' like my friend Initeme (below) but then throw on a scarf paired up with a banging lip stick and Viola!! U have the perfect Pin Up Girl look!!

I am loving how another friend of mine, Anie (Below) is working her own Scarf! You see, if you have just taken your hair out of braids or your hair is due for a relaxer and you are trying to manage your hair till you get one, this look is easy and cute!
If you want to make a Fashion Statement at an event, forget the stereotypical Kardashian waist length Brazilian waves and curls( you will look like EVERYONE)  instead let your Scarf Speak for you!!Just like the Picture below. This Lady does not need to say a word at whatever event she is at, she just needs to strike a pose! Cuz this look is BANGING!!

The good thing about head scarves is that they actually can be used for 'Protective Styling'. Protective styling is when you limit the use of combs, brushes and any manipulation of your hair that will cause it to break off. You can have your hair in like two corn rows(weaving) and  then every morning moisturize and seal the exposed ends of your hair and pop on your hair scarves for like a week! What that will do is greatly minimize the strands of hair you would have lost through out the week from all that combing and brushing. Other Protective Styling techniques include; having your hair in a bun either made out of your own ends or an attached bun so in the morning all you do is smooth out the edges while the ends stay protected or you can purchase wigs and half wigs which I am a big fan of and will dedicate an entire post to because they can transform your look in seconds while your hair stays protected. Remember the key to moving from one length to the other is retaining those ends!!

Below are pictures of my collection of hair scarves and how I wear them!

You don't even have to stick to silk scarves, you can take scraps of old ankara material or laces and stitch them together creating a unique hair piece! What ever you do FEEL FREE to have fun with it! Oh and by the way, Scarves are in BUT Bandanas ( Below) are sooooo OUT! Leave those to Da Brat( Below) Okay!!lol!

Hope you enjoyed this Post and Happy Fathers' Day to all the Wonderful Fathers in our Lives!!

Dabs!!

One of the oldest most common  but also most abused hair practices in Naija is getting a relaxer to relax your roots. Ive seen women from all walks of life use and abuse relaxers! From the woman selling bread that asked her friend to apply it on her head while she waits hours for someone to buy her bread to the mother of a new born baby nursing her child, relaxer on her hair and hands, selling credit! Even those who go to so called salons fall victim of this abuse especially with stylists that refuse to read the instructions on relaxer packs and go ahead and relax their client's hair to the tips or tug and pull the hair with the smallest comb ever or fail to time the relaxing process until lumps of hair fall out.

Most of us fail to realize that the relaxer is a chemical that irreversibly straightens the curl pattern of our hair by loosening the protein bonds of our hair, its an intrusive procedure that literally changes our hair texture for good and therefore should be done with great care. Unfortunately, a lot of  Naija babes don't see the relaxer for what it truly is; I for one before I started my hair journey, viewed the relaxer as my Hair Messiah. To me, my hair was only presentable if it was freshly relaxed and all the sides of my hair sleek, once I noticed those darn new grown tightly curled roots, I'd not hesitate to get my hair relaxed ASAP! As a result, I got a relaxer every month! that's 12 relaxer treatments in a year when our hair grows an average of 1/2 an inch every month; thus I put my hair through all that stress for just 1/2 an inch of it to get straightened while I inevitably overlapped the already relaxed strands  thereby weakening them further! Ridiculous!!

Oh well, I know better now and of course I'm gonna share with you how to relax Naija hair, 'Naija Hair Can Grow Style'.
First off, you must prepare your hair at least a week prior to your relaxer day for the harshness of the chemical process. How? Well I'll start by pointing out that one of the dire effects your hair suffers from relaxing it is dryness. The relaxer strips your hair of moisture as it breaks down those bonds to make it straight, so if your are a good student of mine, you'd know where I'm heading with this. Well a week before I relax my hair I do a Deep Conditioning protein treatment either with a ready made deep conditioner like Organics Cholesterol Tea Tree Oil below, Should not cost more than N1000.
   OR  I mix my own deep conditioning protein treatment with the following; An egg, Some conditioner, some oils and some mayonnaise(which is actually eggs and oil). See picture below

 I actually prefer making my own treatment because I have the luxury to put more conditioner to soften my hair if I choose. I apply either mixture on my hair like I would a relaxer though focusing on my ends and then pop on a plastic bag over my head and then a shower cap over the bag; (don't like using a shower cap directly because of the residue that is left on it). The next step is to stay under my hooded dryer below for at least 30mins; Got this dryer recently from Game at The Palms, Lekki for N13,000
OR before I had a dryer, Id go to a salon near by, shower cap on head covered with a scarf and stay under their hooded dryer for at least 30mins and get my hair washed out OR if I cannot be bothered to go any where, sometimes Id just go about my business at home for at least an hour giving it more time to condition since there is no heat involved. After the time is up, give your hair a wash(without shampoo if you don't mind, because shampoos especially those with sulphates will strip off your hair of the oil and moisture we are trying to preserve. When all that goo is off from your hair, then please 'air dry' your hair because blow drying will dry out your hair and again we are trying to prevent that.

Fast forward to Relaxer Day, the next decision you have to make is, What type of relaxer to use. There are two main type of relaxers. Those with 'Lye' and those without 'Lye'. Forget brands, all relaxers are the same! They either have Lye or they don't. What is Lye? Have you bothered to find out? Well According to www.skinbiology.com, Lye Relaxers contain Sodium Hydroxide which is the strongest principal chemical with the most lasting results for straightening hair; No Lye relaxers on the other hand are not necessarily chemical free, they contain Guanidine Hydroxide, another chemical with a lower PH level, used to straighten hair. Most Relaxers in Boxes containing an activator that is mixed into the relaxer are No Lye relaxers like the one below

While Lye Relaxers are most times without a box because there is nothing to mix to activate them like the Herba Rich Relaxer Below;They are also cheaper by a few box and can be used more than once. This relaxer went for N800, while the One above is about N1500

I'm sure you are wondering where I am going with all this, well hold your horses, I am going somewhere. You see these two types of relaxers have different effects on our hair. I personally can testify to the fact that Lye relaxers do not straighten the hair as well as No Lye relaxers, However while they are said to be harsher on your scalp during the relaxing process, they do not leave the mineral deposits that No Lye relaxers leave causing the hair to be dry, dull and brittle. So in the long run, Lye relaxers are said to be better for your hair. I would therefore recommend a Lye relaxer for hair that is limp and in need of some body. To me all relaxers itch after some time so the whole argument that No Lye relaxers are not harsh on the scalp and thus do not cause itching does not fly with me. I would therefore not use a No Lye relaxer solely based on that argument. However,  if I say I'm straightening my hair, I want it Straight! So if you have healthy hair please use the No Lye relaxer for straighter results, but if you want to just loosen your curl pattern use a Lye relaxer or use a No Lye relaxer with a reduced PH level i.e a mild relaxer instead of a normal or super relaxer. The dryness and dullness complained about from using a No Lye relaxer is taken care of below.

When you have made the decision as to the relaxer you want to use, the next step is to prep your ends. When you relax your hair you need your ends to be moisturized so that as you part and work your way through your roots, the ends do not get all tangled. I moisturize my ends with Hair Conditioner on relaxer day. Then I use some oil or petroleum jelly across my nape and temple and over my ears; you know the drill!! Then I put on a timer, stick to the time on the instruction sheet! trust me every time I have overstayed, I have regretted because of the long strands of my hair that fall out due to over processing.  After the relaxer has been applied to ONLY THE NEW GROWN ROOTS see pic below;

 The next MOST IMPORTANT final step as you go to get your hair washed out is to COAT YOUR ENDS WITH OIL. Why? The good students once again will know that the oil which does not dissolve will prevent the relaxer that is being washed out from penetrating the hair shaft and further processing your already relaxed ends.Wash with hot water first to get the relaxer out and then make sure to wash thoroughly with neutralizing shampoo and then condition, rinse out with luke warm water and finally splash some cold water on your hair if you can bear to, so you seal up the cuticles and give it some shine :)

If you follow these simple steps at least every 8weeks( please don't be like I was, relax your hair when you actually have roots to relax ), you will see an improvement in the quality of your relaxed hair. Also, at least a  week after you relax your hair, repeat the deep conditioning protein treatment to strengthen the hair. I know very few Naija babes relax their hair themselves, so for those of you who don't you can write these tips down or print them out and insist your stylist does the right thing, its your hair, you should have paramount say, do not let some stylist who doesn't care mess it up!!
And for all of you out there trying to get away from relaxers or 'creamy crack' as I've heard its called these days, I am going to guide you through transitioning to natural hair. Please do not think transitioning is the answer to your hair troubles, Get healthy hair first and then we will take it from there okay!! Hang in here with me, drop a message, comment and Ill gladly respond!!

Hiya,
The much anticipated time has come! I’m finally going to share my daily hair regimen with you. A regimen is a process you repeat over and over again until it becomes part and parcel of your everyday routine. Below is my daily hair regimen but let me stress that everybody’s hair is different and you must first identify how your hair responds to a product when you initially start using it. If the response is good these are few traits your hair will portray; breaking or shedding will be minimized, it will be easy to comb, it will be bouncy and shinny. You know a product is not doing anything for your hair when you use it and lumps of your hair are falling out, your hair is dry and brittle, Its unmanageable; you sleep and wake up and there are strands of hair on your pillow, you sit on a chair and when you get up, the same thing; strands of hair! Now when that is happening, no matter who recommended that product to you, even if it’s me; throw it in the bin!!

There are 3 main things you want to accomplish with a daily regimen.
  1. You want to ensure that your hair especially at the ends are MOISTURIZED. Moisturizing is extremely essential for our Naija hair because of our weather. The humidity and heat together will dry out the little moisture your scalp naturally produces and since the strands of our hair are made up of protein bonds which can easily be broken when there is no moisture, you need to keep the moisture balanced with the protein and all that will take a simple application of hair moisturizer to your strands especially the ends because they are the oldest and most fragile part of your hair.

     Now just as not all fingers are equal, not all moisturizers are equal. There are some products out there that I will tell you straight up are posing as moisturizers but are in actual fact NOT moisturizers! Please do me a favor, take a close look at the BODY LOTION you use, feel its consistency, look at its ingredients, most times the first ingredient is water(aqua). Now if you are done with my little exercise I’d like to tell you that  your hair moisturizer should be just like your body lotion if not its doing nothing for your hair! Let me explain; Below are pictures of the two moisturizers I am using at the moment. The first is Africa’s Best Organics Shea Butter Plus (Dry hair and Scalp oil Moisture Therapy) it cost N600 from Lekki Oniru Market and the second One is by Excelsior Botanical Hair Systems; Anti- Breakage Hair strengthening cream From Lekki Market aswell for N1200.

As you can see from the picture with the moisturizer on my palm, these moisturizers are like body lotions that just glide down your palm and are light because of their water based nature! If you do not buy a water based hair moisturizer then the alternative which would do NOTHING for your hair is Petroleum or Mineral Oil based hair moisturizers. Who remembers BLUE MAGIC or SULPHUR 8!!! Even before I had any hair knowledge, God help any Salon stylist that brought these hair creams near my hair! lol. They are packed with mineral oil and the bad thing is that Mineral oil will NOT penetrate into your hair shaft as such an oil like most oils cannot dissolve, so all it is doing is sitting on your hair and doing nothing for your hair internally, now keep using it everyday and it will build up and finally clog your hair from any kind of moisture, no moisture means dry, brittle hair!

These days, brands like Dr Miracle, Motions, Profectiv still use mineral oil in some of their products, you know why? I hear it’s really cheap! Now I know you don’t want that cheap stuff on your hair, no matter what miracle it claims to perform! Invest in an actual moisturizer and see the difference!Below is a  Picture of such a moisturizer. Please STAY AWAY!!

2.The second essential step in your regimen is SEALING the moisture into your hair strands. How? you might wonder? With essential oils like Olive Oil ( see the picture of Goya Extra Virgin Olive Oil below, cost is N 250).

 Other very good oils include Coconut oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Castor Oil (A bit too thick so use a little) and Tea Tree Oil( See my collection of essential oils below; bought them in the US but I’m scouting for them here in Naija and will let you all know if I find them)!

I section my moisturized hair into four sections like I would if I am getting it relaxed and then gently coat the hair from root to tip with my oil of choice.(see picture below).

 I recommend Olive oil the most because of its lightweight nature and then Coconut oil because it is the only oil that penetrates the hair shaft thus moisturizing and sealing at the same time. Sealing plays the following role; as I said earlier most oils don't dissolve, they just sit on the hair thus with sealing, as the oil sits on your hair, it prevents the moisture from escaping your hair and the moisture in turn prevents the hair from drying out and breaking! Genius!!

3.The final step for my Daily regimen is spraying a LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER on the ROOTS of my hair. Leave-in conditioners are liquid and can frizz up your ends if you have had them straightened or curled so focus on the roots of your hair which most times needs the softening from the conditioner especially when your her has new growth or in Naija Terms 'is due'. Right Now I am using Vital Olive Oil  Leave In Conditioner with Pro Vitamin B5, cost N700 at a supermarket in Lekki. Below is a picture of the leave in conditioner and how I spray it, focusing on my roots.

After you have successfully gone through these steps then you proceed to combing your locks with a WIDE TOOTH COMB! It does not matter if your hair is just 4inches long, use a wide tooth comb to at least detangle your strands first before you smooth it out with a smaller comb. Remember we are trying to retain as many strands of hair as possible! Below is a picture of my wide tooth comb from Walmart. Take a close look at the teeth of the comb, so you know what to look out for when purchasing one.

In Summary, I hope this post has been useful to you. My daily regimen is pretty straight forward and I am usually done in five minutes but I must point out that when I started my hair journey I did not restrict myself to doing this regimen only once a day like I do now, I did this regimen at least twice a day. In the morning and at night( your hair is actively growing at night). So if your hair is damaged like mine was, I encourage you to go through this regimen at least twice a day. Also I would like to point out the fact that I don't believe in sticking to a whole line of products from hair companies.Some people are in a rot with their hair because for instance, they will only use products from Dr Miracle or Kera Care or Profectiv, as you can see from my product line up, I beg to differ. Why? well from the point I made earlier about mineral oil being cheap that's why companies use it, you can see that these companies want to cut costs so they cannot put the best ingredients in ALL their products. So expect that in a product line of 10 products, maybe just 4 of the products are of high quality, now do you want to be stuck with the remaining 6 crappy products? I am sure your answer is NO. So you see, please pick and choose what's best for your hair.

Ill end here but expect my WEEKEND REGIMEN, going through it together with my daily regimen has made my hair a force to reckon with. Your's can be too! Drop a comment ask a question and Ill gladly respond!

Hiya,
As you must know, in every society there must be a common language of communication that members of that society understand and can translate. Well its no different in the black hair society  and to care for your hair you must understand effectively the various terminologies out there concerning your hair! I also will be using these terms quite frequently in their abbreviated form and so you understand what I'm saying, its best I introduce these terms to you right away!

HAIR LENGTH
So your hair is relaxed but what is the length of your hair and what is your goal length?

Most Naija babes are at Chin length hair (CL) and with CL hair the most common look is a bob and it will look good if your ends are well trimmed ala Rihanna in the picture below

The next recognized hair length is Neck length (NL) or Shoulder length (SL). This is most Naija babes definition of 'Long hair'! To them, if you can feel your hair on your neck mehn that's long hair!lol! and to be honest if your hair can get to this length without u caring for it then you have the POTENTIAL for long hair!Below is a picture of me at NL/ SL!

 The next Hair Length which most Naija babes have resolved never to reach because of bad hair practices is, Arm Pit length (APL). This is when your hair can comfortably rest on your back up to your arm pit and if you bring your hair forward you can tuck a little of your hair under your arm pit. This is a realistic goal to have and let me tell you when u have hair that is healthy at that length, you don't need to go and buy 12inch or 14inch packs of hair when you have your very own growing from your scalp. As you can see in the picture below, this lady has her hair in a graduated hair cut and most of the ends of her hair are APL!

 Bra Strap Length (BSL) is next and as the name implies, its hair that reaches your bra strap! Its my present goal at the moment as I have already gotten to APL but for my trim which was graduated also and has set me back a few inches! I shall be BSL by December! Say Amen to that!!!! AMEN OHHHH! Below is a picture of a lady with BSL hair;

Now this  next length is for the Naija Babe who wants to look like an Indian babe!! Its the Waist Length ( WL)! Trust me if you have hair at this length in Naija don't be surprised if random people dig their fingers in your hair searching for weave tracks!lol, happens to me at APL!! and please don't be upset if you start hearing rumors that you have a marine spirit!! In all, if its your goal, trust me when I say it is achievable of course not as quickly as it is for you to get that 24inch Indian weave on your head! You'l need time and patience!

Below is Shima, she is African American and as you can see her hair was 'nappy' as a kid just like any kid from African descent, as she grew older in the second picture her hair is basic and should be about SL or APL but then she started her hair journey and aimed for WL hair and viola!! In doubt? visit her website; www.shimahair.com. She claims she used her specially formulated oils and methods to grow her hair from SL to WL in 10months!!! I strongly doubt that part of the gist sha but I do know its her hair for sure!Basic good hair practices and you too could be the next Shima!

This is the first of a series of Hair Terminologies I would like to introduce you all to. Expect more from HAIR LINGUA in the near future.The aim of going through the various hair lengths above is to encourage you to set some goals for your hair. A lot of you expect nothing from your hair when you get a relaxer! No improvement in body, length, shine, texture,  nothing!! and that's like going to Uni and staying in first year for the four year duration of your course!!Point is, your hair strands at your roots are CONSTANTLY growing but for you to move from one length to the other you must retain hair at your ends! The next post will focus on building a regimen that will help do just that so please stay tuned! Hope you enjoyed this post. Drop a comment, ask a question and ill gladly respond!!
