NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW
Hiya,
As most of you know, I have been doing quite a few air trips this month, flew to Houston from Lagos and in a few days had to fly to LA and just came back from LA to Houston today!! Whew!!

With all this air travel I had to come up with a game plan to protect my hair. You all know how DRY being on the plane for long periods of time is. It's so dry that the hostesses recommend drinking water regularly, so you can imagine what that dry air is doing to your hair!

So in this post I share how I combated the dryness.  First thing I did few days before the trip was an overnight deep conditioning hair treatment infusing hair conditioner and essential oils like olive, coconut, sweet almond and tea tree oil.

Make sure you thoroughly detangle your hair and I mean thoroughly when you wash out the treatment the next day because you won't be touching your hair with a comb till you get to your destination especially if you like me are going on a long flight. In my case 6hrs to France and the 9hrs to Houston!

With styling I wanted to let my hair down and let it blow in the wind! Who was I kidding! By the time my  8month old baby pulled my hair when he was throwing a fit while we went through security nobody told me to find the nearest restroom to put my hair in a bun; which leads to my next advice- make sure your hair is comfortably styled with your ends properly protected(leaving the ends out especially if they are past your neck is not advisable! What was I thinking!!)

And always have at least 3 bobby pins stuck  in your hair. It was the bobby pins I used to hold the  bun instead of a hair band because it's less stress and tension on the hair.

Then in a travel sized spray bottle, I mixed glycerin and water. Let me tell you if you do not do anything for your hair during air travel AT LEAST try this step out. I sprayed my hair at least every two hoursfrom root to tip focusing especially on the ends.  For a shorter flight like the LA/Houston 3hrs flight, I'd advice spraying your hair at least once.

I didn't comb or brush my hair though just used my fingers to smooth my hair out. Combing or brushing would have caused undue stress on my hair especially because the moisture from the water/glycerin mix didn't exactly get sealed that's why I sprayed it so often. I thought of adding oils to the mix but changed my mind because I didnt want my hair to become greasy.

When you finally land, please repeat the overnight  deep conditioning treatment. The water/glycerin mix would have served as a preepoo anyway so just slap on your most conditioning moisturizer, in my case its the 2min hair reconstructor by Aphogee, pop on your shower cap,  tie it down with your silk scarf or bonnet and go to zzzzz land!

I did these steps and my hair did not suffer as much as it has suffered in the past when I just traveled without a plan. Try these steps when next you travel especially long distance and let me know how they work for you!! Thanks to all the ladies that have participated in the hair products sales promo or would I say 'your welcome' to them :) because frankly this is an ample chance for hair savvy readers to get all the hair goodies for their hair! Those still interested feel free to send me an email I might be able to squeeze in your orders.

Hope this post is helpful, catch you on the next one!

Hiya!!
Its been a while! If you follow this blog, you will remember that I mentioned that I was going on holiday soon, well I am finally here in the US on holiday and as soon as I got here, I got down to business!

My hair was about 10weeks post relaxer and was due for a touch up, so I decided to use a relaxer I have heard a lot about and was all the rave for sometime called 'Mizani Butter Blends No-Lye relaxer for sensitive scalp'

Using this relaxer confirmed what I ALWAYS say about relaxers, they are ALL the same!!Only difference is wether they are Lye or No Lye simple!! its funny how one of the first questions I get asked  when people see my hair is, what relaxer do you use? Relaxer no be the answer oh!! In fact my experience with this relaxer was so not worth it!! My hair right now is hard as rock and I can't wait to get on with a deep conditioning treatment tonight! The relaxer did relax my hair though but I think it over processed it because I took 30minutes to apply the relaxer since my hair was so due and tangled.

Thats why I always recommend a deep conditioning treatment a week to relaxer day which I did but the stress of the trip dried out my hair like nothing else! Needless to say I will be going back to my beloved Silk Elements No-Lye Relaxer just because its cheaper and smells better and comes with more goodies!

Anyways, Mizani was not the only hair product that caught my eye, I have turned into a product junkie just these past few days, Lord help me for weeks to come! You see, there is nothing as annoying as when you find a good product for your hair in Naija and you go back to where you bought it and its nowhere in sight!! Thats what happened to me when I went to Ebeanor shopping plaza just before my trip to stock up on the ORS hair repair I told you guys I found there recently;
So to avoid that happening again, I am on a mission on this trip to stock up on the best products!! Before I came, I did my research focused mainly on hair moisturizers, leave in conditioners and puddings because I find that with shampoos and conditioners you can afford to use any type because you do not use them as often as hair moisturizers and leave in conditioners which are for everyday use. So let me introduce you to my new best friends;
First on your left we have the ELASTA QP OLIVE OIL and MANGO BUTTER, then we have the MANGO OIL AND CUPUACU BUTTER FEATHER WHIPPED CURL CREAM; I found out about these two from KISS on You tube.

Then in the middle with the Black cover is LUSTRASILK CURL PUDDING ENRICHED WITH ARGAN OIL; saw this, felt its texture, smooth and whipped and decided to give it a try.

In the very middle is AFRICA PRIDE'S SHEA BUTTER MIRACLE PUDDING-  I bought it because of the quantity, never heard of it before but it smells great!!

Then we have MIXED SILK by my favs SILK ELEMENTS!!Its a leave in conditioner, loves it!!

Then another leave in conditioner by ELASTA QP

Then finally, the much hyped especially in the natural circles; SHEA MOISTURE COCONUT & HIBISCUS CURL ENHANCING SMOOTHIE!! Yum Yum!!

Now here comes the SALE PROMO!! 10 things to do to retain length-

Hiya,
So it's been a while since I did a 10 things post, so here I am with 10 things you can do for/ to your hair to ensure that you retain length at the ends of your hair because as I always point out, your hair at the scalp keeps growing but if you do not retain the growth at your ends then you will never notice the growth progress. So here goes...

1.  Moisturize your ends and seal them daily; I am sure I sound like a broken record with this point, I cannot emphasize the importance of this point, it's a maker or breaker!

2. Clip off your split ends regularly, I have posts dedicated to this point,very important.

3. Reduce how often you comb your hair from root to tip! The aim of combing is to detangle your hair and smooth it out but you might get tempted to over detangle and over smooth out your hair, causing you to loose hair unnecessarily. My advice is that in a week, you detangle your hair from root to tip only twice, on wash day and mid week, so say wash day is Saturday, you comb that day and say Wednesday from root to tip, the rest of the days, you should just focus on your ends and smooth out your hair at the scalp with a soft bristle brush, trust me, the amount of hair you loose will greatly reduce.

4. Still on the topic of Detangling, Detangle gently and ALWAYS only after you have moisturized and sealed your hair. If you have curls in your hair, finger detangle first before you use a comb.

5. Protect your ends; from rubbing against your clothes or while you sleep and while it's in a ponytail ( use snag free ponytail holders and do not hold the hair too tightly), sleeping with curls in your hair? Try the Pineapple Method##

6. Avoid Product Overload!! Using too many products at once can make your hair limp and brittle and inhibit length retention. To avoid an overload simply stick to using a moisturizer and one oil to seal. The only time I 'll advice the use of more than one oil or hair product at a time is when you are doing a pre poo or a hair treatment which you will wash out eventually, so your hair won't become limp or brittle.

7. Do not shampoo your ends. Especially if your shampoo has sulphates in it, let the shampoo from your scalp run down and clean your ends, even the action of washing your ends with your scalp all tangled together( naija salon girls wash style) is not good and can cause more knots than necessary, leave your ends alone as you wash your scalp.

8. Don't do a Towel Turban! Or use your towel in anyway that can lead to breakage. Simply blot out the water gently round your head, in sections. Som e circles recommend using a T- Shirt because it is lighter than a towel and doesn't have those towel fibers that can tangle hair but I still use a towel, just more gently.

9.  Be careful with  Extensions; most times extensions put stress on your roots but if you braid your hair and the braider trims off the hair sticking out so the hair looks neat, then she might just be trimming off your ends, or if you leave out hair to cover weave tracks and treat the left out hair like it's weave, by neglecting it or using a weave brush to brush it, it can lead to unhealthy scraggly ends in that section.

10. Never use heat on your ends without using a heat protectant!! If you have none, then use oil JUST BEFORE you apply the heat. That method of spritzing the heat protectant or applying oil sparing on your hair to fulfill all righteousness will not protect your ends effectively because by the time the heat is applied the product might have dried up or never even touched those ends, so sectioning your hair then applying the protectant/oil to that section then applying heat is a safer sequence for protective heat use.

I have come to the end of this post, hope it's useful to ladies struggling with length retention, don't fret your NAIJA HAIR CAN RETAIN GROWTH with these 10 steps!

Hiya,
So I'm back with a second post in 1 night!!Yay!!

I was browsing through bellanaija the other day and came across this ARTICLE , the author's focus was on educating people on the issue of hair care, relaxing properly etc. Good educative material, then I scrolled to the comments and I almost threw up on myself!! The Natural Nazis ( as someone aptly termed them) were in town. Now I will pause first to acknowledge and thank EVERY NATURAL haired lady that follows this blog or has ever come to this blog and read and received with an open mind what I have had to say because apparently my hair is simply UNhealthy for being relaxed!

You see human beings are really funny, it is in our make up to factionalize ourselves in groups and start to form complexes! I'm superior, you are inferior! Case in point  this year's Bigbrother Africa has two houses, the downvillers- common people like me and the Upvillers- 'Celebrities', as weeks unfolded, downvillers were brought to Upville and it was so funny to hear Upvillers during their diary sessions talk to Big brother about downvillers like they were a different specie altogether- ' you see biggie, these downvillers don't kow how to act- blah blah!' I just kept saying to myself, because they have called you Upvillers now, you automatically think you are better than downvillers, same thing that caused racism, religious factions, tribalism now NATURALHAIRSIM!!

Yes oh, it exists life and direct! Just read some of the comments I culled from the article below;

'It’s not possible to have healthy relaxed hair. Relaxed hair by its very nature is damaged by the process of relaxing so sorry. Better luck next time. Try again.'

'It does not matter whether your relaxed hair looks as thick as any of Beyonce’s lacefronts. Once you have applied that chemical to your hair, your hair is no longer healthy.'

READ MORE VENOM;

'Sometimes I wonder if relaxer has smoked people’s brains out. Sugabelly is 1000% right! Yes, natural hair can be unhealthy if uncared for but relaxed hair is BY DEFAULT, UNHEALTHY!!! While natural hair is BY DEFAULT, HEALTHY. You CANNOT have healthy and relaxed hair, it is indeed an oxymoron; that option doesn’t even exist whereas you can certainly attain healthy natural hair.

'When you PERMANENTLY ALTER YOUR PHYSICAL TEXTURE, YOUR HAIR BECOMES UNHEALTHY. Read a F****** book'

'Looking after relaxed hair is medicine after death
We are all just in denial because obviously, we are afraid of change and the self-hate is something we do not want to admit.'

'Just say, you are too lazy to care for your hair and you like the look of relaxed hair and the illusion of long hair with wigs/weaves.'

WOW, exhausted just looking at these comments, trust me there are more comments but I just picked a few that stood out! Now it's funny that natural hair ladies turned this article topic to ' Relaxed hair= unhealthy hair, PERIOD! Was that the topic? No! Even if that was the topic and they wanted to seize the opportunity to educate relaxed ladies on going natural, what kind of condescending, holier than thou tones were these comments written in!

How 'healthy' are some of the choices we make on a daily basis? Its like me saying why on earth will you put a hole in your ear and weigh it down with something you call an 'ear ring' do you know the consequences?! Your earlobes will be drooping when you are 80 years old! Well, inspite of that possibility, we all still wear earrings!! Or like some commenters fired back;

'you might like ur hair healthy and natural but the faux leather shoes, bags and cosmetics u carry and use are tested on some poor animals and are not so natural.'

'Even the food you eat, as long as you eat some form of processed food, that is chemical exposure too. Your mobile phone, that you put close to your ears for hours daily, is also chemical exposure. So avoiding relaxed hair because of the chemicals damaging it, is a moot point.'

'is it the use of the word HEALTHY, that is causing all this...I’ve seen some obese ladies with natural hair, I’ll prefer it if they put in as much effort in their health than in their hair. #teamgoodbeautifulhair (relaxed, dreadlocks, kinky &all)'

You see to me, relaxing your hair or not  is NOT a do or die affair that warranted some of these comments, I strongly leaned to some degree on what this commenter said;

'Any hair that grows out of your scalp and is visible to the human eye is dead fiber… Anything “dead” cannot be healthy; be it chemically treated or not… So to all of you that discuss hair and use the word “healthy” there’s no such thing as “healthy” hair… There is “well managed” hair or hair that is “well cared for”.. When you realize that maybe you’d learn to appreciate people’s choices when it comes to chemically treat their hair or not…'

Basically hair, nails are all dead red and white blood cells that keep accumulating. If you care for them well you will accumulate them for longer, if you don't they fray off and you loose them. That's why its 'HEALTH' is determined first from how well your body health internally is, then how well its maintained externally!Simple!

Yes I am the first to tell you that if you use a relaxer to break down your hair shaft to get straighter hair, you have exposed your hair adversely to some degree and it is more likely to be weak, the same weakness can result if you are natural and you color treat your hair with hair dyes. Its just like if you are white and tan in the sun without sun protection you expose yourself to skin cancer, but if you tan with sun protection, you will be protected and can tan as long as you like! Likewise if after you relax your hair( and  there's no proof that relaxers cause cancer) you protect it daily and have good hair practices, your hair will not suffer as adversely as it would without that care.

I always liken being relaxed to getting an epidural during child birth! Wow before I had my baby I got an earful from EVERYBODY telling me not to get an epidural, stories upon stories of paralysis and numbness scared the crap out of me but then the time came and I did not hesitate the offer of an epidural! Now are you telling me that I am less of a mother to my son than the lady who struggled through the pain and refused an epidural and had her baby?! Really?? Is it not the 2eyes, 1 nose, 2 ears her son has that mine has? Because I choose an option that in my opinion is less stressful and easier for me to pull off I have to be labelled as LAZY or having SELF- HATE! What a flawed warped mentality!!  Ladies saying this should also start writing letters and posting them instead of using their phones or computers or stop driving their cars and use their foot everywhere they go so as to stop polluting our beloved earth!

The Relaxer has solved a problem for people who want more manageable hair, well for me that's the only reason I relax my hair! If done properly and not too regularly (just like with ice cream, cakes, alcohol- too much of everything is bad) your hair whether anybody likes to believe it or not will grow and be healthy!!!
If you think because you have gone natural it will equal healthy hair, you have been greatly deceived my dear, if you can look at my hair and call it unhealthy then I want to have UNhealthy hair all day, anytime!! LOL

I'd like to hear your views on this issue! Is my hair simply unhealthy because I relaxed it? What is healthy and unhealthy hair to you?

Ps.  My grand mother who has natural hair, never relaxed it has receding hairline, brittle hair that breaks so easily, she spent a few months with me, stopped using blue magic and sulphur 8, started conditioning her hair and after seeing improvements asked me why I hadn't educated her about hair all this while! So it's not about being relaxed or not at the end of the day, how well do you treat these accumulated DEAD cells on your scalp!!

Hiya,
So a lot of hair terms are used very loosely in Naija!

You hear things like, 'my hair does not want to grow o' Really?! Have you taken a look at your scalp lately and seen those tightly formed curls sprouting out?!
Or you hear 'my hair can break eh!' . The hair on your comb you are calling broken hair, is it really broken or it's shed hair.
The one that makes me laugh the most is 'my hair is toooooo strong/tough, Kai' I laugh when I hear that because that was always my go to line for the hair problems I faced before I started my hair journey, I find myself making that excuse even now when asked why I won't go natural, lol hair being ' strong' should be a good thing and not a problem right? that it is dry and brittle and therefore hard to deal with means it is crying for moisture, with moisture every 'strong' hair must surely be 'soft'!

If you have found yourself giving those excuses, take your time to answer the quiz below and consider the remedies to the questions so you can effectively identify your hair problems and tackle them accordingly.

Is your hair breaking?
The most common problem people complain about, but like I asked above, is it really breaking? Before you start to fret examine the hair on your comb, if you see a white tip on the strands then your hair is simply shedding, if you have about 10 to 15 strands on your comb then thats minimal breakage ( everybody's minimal gauge is different, study your own and find out what your normal hair loss pattern is)  but patches of broken hair signify more extensive damage. To prevent the damage, build a hair regimen that comprises of a good balance between moisture and protein.

Does your hair have elasticity?
Take a strand of shed hair, place it on a flat surface and mark where it ends.

Now gently pull the strand away from its roots without allowing it to break;

Your  hair should be able to stretch a considerable amount of its length before breaking. If it can’t be stretched without breaking then it has lost some elasticity and strength, it is in this case you can say your hair is NOT strong! What you will need to do? Up your intensive moisture game, as with everything African hair related, moisture is key. You can make a hair spritz with light oils mixed with water and don't fail to deep condition or co-wash every weekend until you see some improvement, stretch your shed hair strands regularly to gauge your elasticity  level.

Do you have shiny hair or is it dull looking, dry and brittle?
Dull hair is a result of loosened cuticle layers, look at a tree,  the trunk isn't just one big flat log of wood. It's bark has layers upon layers of overlapping wood that give its trunk the strength and thickness, my dear ladies na so our hair be too! God just replicated the same process on each strand of hair, your hair is shinny and reflects light when your cuticle layers are tightly bound together, when they begin to loosen up, split ends that cause brittleness are created and dull and dry looking hair is the result, to avoid that you know the drill by now, Moisturize and Seal daily!

Is your hair Porous?
Porosity assess how easily the hair accepts and releases moisture and the products and treatments you give it. When your cuticle becomes damaged and is no longer tightly aligned, it will fail to provide proper coverage to the hair shaft ( see my tree illustration above) as a result your hair will be like a basket used to fetch water, how will that work! To prevent this from happening your focus should be building the cuticle again and keratin a very important component that links hair bonds together needs to be infused in your hair through regular protien treatments, either using eggs or specially formulated hydrolized protien infused hair products like this one I found;

Eating a well balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and raw vegetables ( I wish I was a better example in this regard) can help with this issue. Limit the amount of starches, fatty and processed foods you consume  and drink plenty of water.

Do you have split ends?
Who doesn't?!lol! It's the volume that counts! You will know if the volume of split ends in your hair is excessive if you answer this question in the affirmative;  Does your hair tangle a lot? tangling and snagging is all caused by frayed/ split  hair  fibers and that is why your hair is growing but you might not notice any change because your split ends have not given it a chance to show. Regular, strategic trims can avoid excessive split ends, my latest post on trimmed ends can guide you. Avoiding heat especially on your ends can also prevent more ends from splitting.

So there you have it, our first NHCG hair quiz! I have a feeling most of you will pass this quiz because of the many emails I get of ladies telling me about how much their hair has improved. But for those still figuring things out, don't be discouraged, just get with the program and give your hair time to catch up, it surely will!

hiya!!
Its been a minute!!Hope all is well with you all! So I was looking through my pictures the other day and I found a picture of a lady I stalked, YES STALKED at the Palms last year!! She was walking past Health Plus and I spotted her and like a tiger who has just spotted its prey I approached her keenly and told her I loved her hair and wanted to take a pic of it for my blog and she kindly obliged me, so here is RiRi's (the name she gave me) healthy hair;

This is a 100 % Naija girl's hair oh!!I did not try to interview her because she seemed in a hurry but I am sure she takes good care of her hair, just look at how shinny it is. I want to use this medium to encourage all those who are giving up on their hair journey, its not only my hair that can grow, your's too can grow!! You might not see much change initially but keep doing the right things to your hair and your hair will surely respond!
