NAIJA HAIR CAN GROW

Hiya,
I mentioned in an interview I had with Sizzling Mom here when asked about exercising, that I exercise but what I failed to mention was the hatred I have for stringent gym work outs, running on the thread mill or lifting weights till there's no strength in me!! Hate all that! So you can imagine my joy and excitement when I tried out Zumba dance fitness class, a class started by Miss Faka Ben-Kalio earlier in the year, it was perfect for my post postpartum body, every muscle in my body definitely got a work out but this time around it was dancing to very fun Latin dance music. I left that class wanting more and have attended very regularly since then! Enough about my experience, meet my Zumba instructor-

who also isn't joking with caring for her hair!
Please Introduce Yourself...
I am Faka Ben-Kalio AKA Fabila, a Lawyer by profession, a Zumba dance fitness instructor by passion!

Since this is a hair blog let's talk hair first of all,
How long is your hair? My hair is currently past shoulder length well on its way to Arm pit length (APL);
NOVEMBER 2011

In October 2012;

As it is relaxed, how often do you get a touch up? Every 10 weeks minimum

What d you do to help grow your hair, do you have a regimen?
I find that leaving my hair dirty for a while helps it grow, it may sound gross but I think it does.
I also deep condition my hair with Organics hair mayonnaise.

( NHCG says while I strongly recommend at least a co wash once a week, I acknowledge the importance of knowing what works for your hair, Fakus knows what works for her hair and that's the most important thing)

How has NHCG helped with your hair regimen? I visit NHCG for the DIY hair mixtures and DIY hair styles. I am looking to try one of the protective styles soon although I have tried a few in the past.

Now to Zumba...

What is Zumba Dance fitness all about? Zumba dance fitness is a mixture Latin dance and aerobics. Unlike other exercises, it's a total body workout.

When did you start your classes, are you a trained instructor? I began my classes in January 2012, I am a licensed instructor with certification from the United Kingdom to instruct and coordinate Zumba Dance fitness classes in Nigeria.

What makes Zumba different from any normal workout and what do people that tend your class stand to gain from it?
Zumba incorporates cardio exercise while at the same time helping to tone the arms, legs, stomach (abs) and generally improves your mood.
( NHCG says I can personally attest to all these benefits of Zumba especially the mood part,  if you like dancing and having fun like I do, Her class is the best atmosphere for that)

What should a beginner of your Zumba class have in mind when attending the class for the first time? You do not need to be a dancer to enjoy the classes, it is for everyone.

Well that's the end of my interview with Faka, if you are in Lagos and looking for a fun but effective way to sweat it out, try Faka's Zumba dance fitness classes. They hold at the Life Quest Gym at Glover Court, off Glover road, Ikoyi Lagos. Classes hold Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 10am. Hope to see you there, from Tomoz (Thursday)!!

PS. My heart goes out to all my readers on the East Coast of the US. Please stay safe and strong during these trying times, Sandy can only take material things not your will for life, strength and resilience! God will see you all through! Hugs from your Naija Sister!!

Cheers
Dabs

Hiya,
The long weekend went by in a flash!! Back to work on Monday!!arghhh!

Okay, enough of my moaning, here are a few protective styles I tweaked from models during last month's New York Fashion Week. This post really is to inspire ladies out there who want to practice protective styling aside from the usual weaves and extensions, its also a great way to learn how to play with your hair, feel free to get inspired and tweak the styles like I did and if you'd like send me a picture; daboju@yahoo.com and I'll post it on the facebook page :)

The first look was a big side braid swoop (you know I like my braids). This look was rocked by models at the EMERSON fashion show.
MY VERSION;

I rocked this look for a whole week, all I did was spritz the braid with water and glycerin each day and re braided the braid after a few days. I liked this look so much I wore it out for an event;

Another look I got inspired by was this look for MARCHESA;
 MY VERSION;

I put my ends in a bun- protective styling remember!

HERVE LEGER had models style their hair with a single braid pulled to the back-loves it!!

MY VERSION;
I tucked away my ends as I didn't want my ends dangling down.

Other styles from the NYFW I will be trying;

This look for Jason Wu;

 This look (very weddingly) for Joanna Mastroianni

I liked these edgy looks- simple but edgy!

RACHEL COMEY

SUNO

I also created some looks of my own;

This first look is an elaborate pompadour style achieved by folding forward the ends of my hair after holding it up in a high pony;

I tried out a milder version for church, accessorized with an earring to match my dress! lol me and shenanigans!!

Well that's the end of my protective look post! Hope y'all get inspired :)

 The MONTHLY IMPORT FINDS Window is opening up really soon, from the 1st to the 7th of NOVEMBER!! Take full advantage to get products you cannot get here in Naija. Find out more HERE.

Have a great week ahead!

Hiya,
So you have seen the picture of my horrible inverted V here! Now let me tell you all about it!

Just before I started this blog I noticed the ends of my hair were thin all across;'

Not  particularly in a V shape or a U shape or a Z! literally from one end to the other so I cut it but I noticed as I took about 5 inches of my hair off that I still had a thinner spot at the back in the middle of my ends; (can you see it?)

 However I didn't think much of it and thought it will grow out in a few months.

For a minute it looked like it had filled out,

This I am guessing was due to the pregnancy hormones! By the time I had my baby and the postpartum shedding set in, the V began to show again;

 Instead of give it the needed attention I treated that spot like every other part of my hair, and worse; I let my ends dangle quite often and still didn't notice how deep my V was getting until I took this after pic for my blog anniversary;

 I was like WHAT!!

I dabbled with the idea of cutting my hair then and probably should have but I was stuck with this idea that my hair was bra strap length finally and I didn't want to go back to APL- look at what boxing yourself in all these phrases can cause! Anyways I ignored the V, hoping it will grow out, I also saved myself the stress of stressing over it by avoiding taking pics of my back hair-ignorance is so not bliss with hair care! You have to face the problem or else it will not go away- something this inverted V taught me!

July came by, then August , September came and then I took this picture to show the back of the NHCG t-shirt I made;

and that V stared me in the face, then and there I decided enough is enough, this V has got to go!!

So I decided that rather than wait for the V to grow out which would not make a difference because the long part would just keep getting longer, I rather cut most of it out and nurture my middle back hair to prevent it from breaking off and creating that V again!

Moving Forward... I have come up with the perfect plan to combat the inverted V or any part of my hair especially the ends that tries to be weak and get in my way of healthy long hair! Since my relaxer I have taken the following ample but critical steps;

I now Bag my ends EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! I have talked about bagging a few times now,check here I used to do it occasionally but I have been doing it every night for the past week and I tell you my ends have never felt so good! They have remained moisturized and sealed with black castor oil all day and night and apart from shed hair I am yet to see any broken hairs.

I simply moisturize my ends with any moisturizer I am feeling at the moment(I am so spoilt for choice right now) and then I seal with either coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil but then I follow that with a final black castor oil seal and apply a little of the castor oil to my roots at the middle back area.

I then roll my ends in a bun, pin it down;

and cover it up with a nylon bag( which will help create steam and keep your ends from drying out), I secure the nylon bag with a hair band;

and pop on my silk scarf.

I have also started sleeping with a silk pillow made by me :) this is to ensure that just in case my silk scarf falls off(as it has many times) my hair will still be protected especially my hairline.

The final new thing I am doing is, I concocted a TEA SPRITZ!  This is by far the most exciting part of this new 'combat' because this tea spritz is  PACKED with great stuff!

The first thing I did was brew some tea bags;

 Black tea to preventing shedding; this post  tells you more and then this mint and green tea;

( I brewed it and had a cuppa- Divine!!)

 Mint is very good for cleansing, conditioning the scalp and stimulating hair follicle growth.

I added the two tea bags because the green tea bag did not have enough caffeine in it to prevent shedding  which the black tea bag compensated for and I also wanted the effects of the green herbs and the mint.

                                    I also bought mint leaves which I added for an extra minty smell;

I used few drops of extra virgin olive oil, almond oil and grape seed oil,all light oils because I wanted the spritz to be light/watery and not oily.

Then I ground some Fenugreek seeds;

My first encounter with Fenugreek was in January, my doctor recommended it to me to help with some post partum issues I was having, so I got a bottle of fenugreek capsules from GNC, took them for a while but could not stand the maple syrup smell, YUCK!! I love maple syrup on pancakes but this was just too much, I was sweating maple syrup! so I dumped it! Few months down the line, I am reading an article on herbal hair treatments and I see Fenugreek as one of the herbs great for hair, I look for my GNC capsules everywhere and then realize I must have dumped them in Houston!! Arrghh.

I thought I might have to import it but then yesterday as I was browsing through the indian spice/food stalls at Park n Shop where I got the mint leaves and the tea, what do I see, a pack of Fenugreek seeds for cheap!! I excitedly grabbed a pack!

I will have a separate post on Fenugreek in a few days but in summary this seed contains nicotine acid, protein and lecithin which are all great for hair because they help stimulate growth, strengthen the roots and bring back moisture and luster to hair from root to tip! Fenugreek  is used to prevent balding or thinning in men and women!

I decided to grind mine and sprinkle the ground seeds into my brewed tea;

 There are other ways to use it which I will share in a future post..

Then I added drinking water(because it is sterilized and less likely to create mold) and shook the living daylight out of the mixture (which will remain in the fridge for added preservation).

I will use this mixture on the scalp of my middle back hair from now on every morning, I decided day time is better than night time because I don't want my bedding smelling of mint/syrup/black/green tea all at once before my hubby chases me from the bed!LOL

As for styling, I had my hair down today and regretted it, my hair just has to stay up and off my shoulders for a majority of the time from now on!

In December the verdict will be in and I will let you know how successful (fingers crossed) this combat was!!

I have come to the end of this long post! If you are suffering from a set back or you have a thin spot, you can decide to nurture it and see if it will recover using these tips and many others I have on this blog under the HAIR CARE CATEGORY  or you can decide to skip the wait and give that spot a reasonable cut so you have a good starting point like I am doing!

Please whatever you do, do what is best for your hair! Do not hold on to 5 strands of hair that go past your shoulders so that people can say you have long hair; most of the compliments I get about my hair being long always follow with 'and it's so full and healthy to the tips' so you can imagine how I started feeling when I saw what the V was doing to my ends!

My dear friends take Health over Length because when you focus on health, length follows! Simple!!

Stay tuned for my next post, maybe tomoz seeing that I will be free because it's  a 4 day weekend,  Whoop Whoop!!

Hiya,
How's everyone doing?! hope all's well and good at your endz! Well its that time of the month when I bring a relaxer update after a successful 9weeks stretch! I was gunning for 12 weeks but then I did the math and realized that I will not be up to 9 weeks post relaxer in December by the time its my son's first birthday and you know how I like fresh edges for special occasions, so I stuck to my 9weeks calender.

I decided I was going to try out Jen from Justgrowalready's method http://www.justgrowalready.com/2012/10/relaxer-touch-up-video-of-how-i-self.html#.UINwDrJmR3d of relaxing hair by getting them sectioned in small twists. I also decided to TEXLAX my hair this time! So I gave myself 15 minutes from start(after twists were done) to finish! With my eyes on the clock I was off to a speeding start!!

I coated my ends with conditioner and olive oil and twisted them in small sections;

Then I mixed the relaxer swiftly, I used my favorite relaxer in the world-
Applied the mix to just the new growth, as close as I could get, Can't wait to be sprushified!! I tell Ya!

Then smooth it out with a comb, I contemplated this step a bit because I really wanted to maintain the texture  in my hair but after a closer look, I decided to smooth it out just once and not aggressively like those salon stylists!!LOL!

Of Course I focused on just the roots, I also found that the twists helped minimize the amount of time spent on dividing and sectioning to smooth out while the relaxer was on, it also greatly minimized hair loss too, you know how tangled and matted new growth can be making that extra step of sectioning it to smooth it out while relaxing, a serious hair loss point in the whole relaxing process. This time all I did was LIFT and SMOOTH out! Such a breeze! I then proceeded to take the twists out quickly;

When I was done, I simply applied  more conditioner to the ends and ran to the bathroom, I didn't make the 15minute cut though :( By the time I was done it was more like 20 minutes but that was fine seeing as I usually spend at least 30minutes normally! And When my hair was dried I found out that I accomplished my goal, my hair was TEXLAXED!!YAY!!

I cannot believe I am happy with my roots looking that way, If it was in the past I would be so upset and feel like getting a correction done ASAP, thank God for knowledge!!
I proceeded to straighten my hair using low heat as I always do on relax day to generally check where my hair is at;

Look at all that texture!! I see great things for the ends of my hair in a few years time with texture like that!! :)
Oh and the answer to what I did about my horrid inverted V I talked about here is, I CUT MY HAIR!! I will have a separate post on the entire inverted V saga; How it started, what I think caused it and what I have learnt moving forward. But for the mean time my ends went from looking like this;

To Looking like this;

I took about 4 inches off before I relaxed my hair about a week ago and though it was not the most pleasant experience knowing I was suffering from a set back in my hair journey, I took it in good faith and had to constantly remind my self that it is called a hair JOURNEY for a reason, its not a race, so even if it takes me longer than I'd hoped to get to my goal, the fact remains that I will get there someday and I urge all those new to this 'hair journey thingy' (as most newbies call it), to stay encouraged and focused on your goal and refuse to let the slightest set back get you down okay!!

Have a great week ahead, great things to come here!

Hiya,
It's time for another post!!  This time I am going to let you all in on a new hair tool I was introduced to called a SPRUSH!

It is a bridge between an applicator brush and a cake batter spatula and aims at precise application of hair products, from relaxers , color like henna,  hair butters to hair treatments/ concoctions! One of my readers me thinks it's Folake ( thanks dear) brought my attention to this ingenious hair tool and then proceeded to send me to a hair blog I am loving; www.justgrowalready.com and let me tell you, I cannot wait to get my hands on this tool!!

I was hoping it will be here by my relax day which is this weekend but certain hiccups caused me to delay the order but by God's grace my December relaxer will be SPRUSHIFIED baby!!

Now what are the benefits?

The application is PRECISE; when it comes to relaxing especially, overlapping already relaxed hair which is usually inevitable with comb and finger applications really contribute to dryness and brittleness most relaxed ladies(myself included) have to battle regularly!

Just imagine if the relaxer was applied to only the 1/2 to 1 inch of new growth your hair grows out, then your already relaxed hair was left untouched and protectively moisturized and sealed, your hair will not look as 'fried and dried' and maybe relaxers would not be getting such a bad name!

Sprushes from reviews and what I can see are also very gentle to the hair! Their applicator ends and teeth are made of rubber; think baking spatulas which means all the breakage your hair experiences from the snags that happen with tail combs and applicator brushes as you relax it or apply other treatments will be a thing of the past!

They come in a vast variety which is great because the sprush that works for my hair  might not work for your hair! Why? Maybe my hair is thicker than yours and needs a sprush that can pile on the product, maybe my new growth is just 1/2 an inch unlike your's that is 2inches, I will need a sprush with a smaller applicator for precise application of the relaxer. If I want a sprush for all over application of henna from root to tip, it is available. It also helps to manage the amount of product you use, when you use your fingers you tend to scoop out too much product at once, your comb or brush tends to scoop too little, the rubberized tip of a sprush scoops just the right amount you need! So in my books that's a major  plus!

They are EASY to clean up! If you self relax like I do or indulge in hair treatments you will know how annoyingly painstaking getting relaxer or treatment mixtures out of the teeth of a tail comb or applicator brush can be! With a sprush since the tip is all rubberized and there are no teeths, all it takes is a rinse and a wipe! That's all!! What a reward after all the stress of applying the relaxer or treatment to your hair!

Finally sprushes are affordable!! Basically you are getting professional treatment for a bargain!!! They are sold for a unit cost of about $7! Plus I love that they come in really fun colors!

So without a doubt SHOP NHCG will be taking orders for sprushes to come with next month's imports! Just go to this website; http://templeclean.com/pages/product_sprush.htm and browse through the variety of sprushes they have! You never know, a sprush could save your hair!! :)

Stay tuned for my relaxer post this weekend, I learnt a really cool relaxing technique from Jeni of justgrowalready and I cannot wait to try it out!!

By the way; please follow me on twitter by clicking the follow @dabsieof NHCG tab on the top right of the home page to stay updated with posts especially when Facebook decides to act up!!  Xxx

Hiya,
How's every one doing?! The internet service on my end has been horrible for the past week! Luckily its working better today so I decided I will post a video I made last weekend( I had to break the video into 2 clips because apparently after all my blabbering the video was too long, but these clips at least capture the essence of this post) plus pictures for those who cannot watch the video. It is basically showing how I straightened my hair after spritzing my roots with detangler, applying hair moisturizer on small sections of hair, split remedy to protect my ends and chi silk infusion heat protectant using very low heat, concentrating on my roots and finally, sealed the ends with black castor oil.

SHOWING YOU HOW I STRAIGHTEN THE ROOTS

                                               TALKING ABOUT MY INVERTED V!

The products I used

Sectioned hair in small parts

Spritz my roots with detangler

Applied Tresemme Curl hydration from root to tip

Then applied split remedy to the tips of my hair

Chi silk infusion before I applied the heat

Using very low heat- level 10 out of 35 I straightened that section of hair

Then applied black castor oil to the very tips of my hair
With this method, my hair did not get fried out and light but still retained its body and was super soft, detangled and the new growth was easier to manage(that is the sole purpose of this heat pass);

In the video. I talk about my inverted V in the  back of my hair!! I was in a dilemma, should I cut my hair now and get rid of the annoying V or wait till it grows out? Find out what I decided in my Relaxer post next weekend!!

In other news, african naturalista has set up a product swap forum here where ladies can swap products they are not using with each other. I think its a cool idea and already have some products I want to swap. Check it out on her blog.

Well that's all from me for now, catch you on my next post.

P.S Please forgive my frowning face, it was a long long day and at least I managed a smile in the last pic :)!!
